A Day in the Life of a Srilankan Software Engineer

Jehan Gamage who is working for a reputed Srilankan IT firm for 2 years now and he will be the first person in our post series to start from today. He will continue to share his day to day experiences for you to learn and get motivated.

5.30 A.M. ( Alarm Rings )

Holy… Another day. This is what first comes into my mind every day when I hear the alarm beeps. 5 A.M, yes. I used to awake at 5 A.M in the early morning daily. Then I always drink a glass of water to get hydrated.

6.00 A.M

I left home at around 6.30 A.M. to avoid the traffic jam in the Colombo area. It will save a few liters of petrol for me. Colombo Traffic is the worst thing for anyone who is traveling daily from and to Colombo.

7.00 A.M.

So, guys, I arrived at the office premises. We got our own car park here. Yes, it is one of the positive characteristics of a good company. If you like to know about the characteristics of a good software companies. Check out this link. So, no need to worry about parking. Normally, Park gets packed after around 9 A.M. But, I would say, it is almost enough for the employees who come by own vehicle. I have parked my car safely.

7.05 A.M

I used to put my fingerprint around 7.05 A.M. every day if there is nothing happened strangely. The first thing, I do when I entered the office is to take my water bottle and go to the dining area, pour some fresh water and come back to my table. Now the boring thing, connect my office laptop with a whole lot of cables ( network cable, HDMI cables, charger cable, headphone, and etc… ).

7.30 A.M

Checking mailbox is the first thing we do whether you are a SE ( Software Engineer ), QA, or Analyst. Because you should always up to date with what is going on in the team, product group, and organization. Usually, it takes 15-20 mins to check and reply to those emails unless it is not about your resignation.

7.45 A.M

Typical Software Engineer’s life starts. I’m going to check my JIRA board ( Powerful Project Management Software that IT companies use to manage projects/tasks – Simple explanation ) & trying to remind what I was working on last week, what was finished and what was left to be done. I also jot down the important things that need to be discussed in the daily stand up meeting which will start at 10 A.M.

8 A.M. - 10 A.M.

Coding… Coding… Coding… It could be a Bug Fix, Feature development, or Performance issue or even a 2 hr thinking and come up with the best/optimal solution.

10 A.M

Guys, we the team of 8 members gathers together to start our daily stand up ( Stand up is simply a meeting that project team gathers to talk about what they have achieved in day to day tasks, and to talk about the issues that each individual got). Normally, we use the nearest meeting room or skype to make a group call and continue the standup for 15-30 minutes.

10.30 A.M

Cofee time guys. We used to gather in the tea area ( whole product team ) and start making fun of each, rude words and all the fun there. Some times we play some Foose ball, Carom, Pool or PS4 games too. We got a separate play area in the office. Yes, that is a good investment to your company to motivate the employees.

11 A.M.

Coding… Coding… Coding… Most of the times I used to listen to the songs while coding. It makes me more productive and helps to stay without getting sleepy.

12.30 P.M

Holy lunch! No talkiing while eating guys. Sorry. We got 1-hour lunchtime. The best thing is we get free lunch and desserts from the company.

1.30 P.M. - 3.30 P.M

Coding time and Meeting time. Guys, as a software engineer, we got a whole lot of meetings daily with Project Managers, Lead Engineers, QAs and many stakeholders. ( These things will be discussed in a separate post in near future. )

4 P.M. – 4.15 P.M

I used to play Foose Ball, or PS4 Video Game before leaving the office. So, guys, it is the end of the day of a Srilankan software engineer. Now, what I only need is a good dinner, family time and sleep. So See you soon with the next post.

Please comment if you have any idea about the post or even how you spend your day as a Software engineer. Your Comments, Suggestions will really motivate me to continue this posts series.
